How is Breast Reduction Performed?

Dr. Burgdorf has mastered a variety of surgical techniques and will choose the best approach for achieving your unique cosmetic goals. One's breast reduction surgery in Nashville is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes 3 to 4 hours to complete. After creating your incisions, Dr. Burgdorf will remove excess skin and tissue and reposition the nipple in a more youthful, elevated location. The areola will be resized appropriately. For some patients, Dr. Burgdorf may perform a breast lift and liposuction in combination with breast reduction. His goal is always to provide a natural-looking and balanced final result.

Incision Options

There are three incision types to choose from. The first encircles the nipple, with scarring well hidden in the darker pigments of the areola. This approach is well-suited for those who need a minimal amount of tissue removal. The second incision type encircles the nipple, and then runs down vertically to the breast crease, mimicking the shape of a lollipop.

This option is well-suited to those with a medium amount of required tissue removal. Finally, for those with a significant amount of tissue to be removed, an anchor incision encircles the nipple, runs down vertically to the breast crease, and then extends horizontally along the inframammary fold.

If you have been experiencing pain or other physical problems because of your breast size, your health insurance may cover some of the costs of breast reduction surgery, but proceed with caution. Dr. Burgdorf has seen, too often, patients from other surgeons who have undergone an insurance-based breast reduction be dissatisfied and disappointed with the results. Often this was because the priority was in ensuring all the stringent  “requirements” were met for insurance coverage, not the results that a patient would live with for the rest of her life. Dr. Burgdorf takes a different approach to this.

While an insurance-based breast reduction can be seen initially as a positive in some patients' eyes, in reality, many have found results dictated by unreasonable insurance requirements that are less than attractive, and Dr. Burgdorf believes, frankly, this is the wrong way to treat patients. In today's climate of high deductibles and large out-of-pocket co-pays, combined with results that are inconsistent with a patient’s cosmetic desires, Dr. Burgdorf feels that offering an insurance-based breast reduction is a disservice to his patients and he will refuse to be constricted by insurance demands.

What Can I Expect From Recovery?
